The internet in the living room

The WSJ (and loads of blogs) are buzzing today with the announcement of a new LG TV that will have the capability to directly stream Netflix videos without any additional hardware. In other words, in addition to the usual A/V and HDMI inputs on the back of the TV, this new set will also have an ethernet port.

In the words of Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, "The symbolism of being directly in the TV is very high."

I for one agree with that statement. The idea of the internet on your TV as a standard feature is a pretty big step...one that will surely be matched by LG's competitors, which will ultimately lead to large numbers of internet ready TV's flooding the market.

If they sell well of course, and with today's economy that's a very big "if"...
